  • proof of a man's incompetence

I’ve long since had Ayn Ryand on my Todo list after recommendations from a lot of people on the lines of “I cant believe you havent read THAT yet!” …I’d say this post from (an Orkut friend) Sunayana‘s blog is definitely a catalyst… 🙂

    I particularly liked this one…

If there is any one proof of a man’s incompetence, it is the stagnant mentality of a worker who, doing some small routine job in a vast undertaking, does not care to look beyond the lever of a machine, does not choose to know how the machine got there or what makes his job possible, and proclaims that the management of the undertaking is parasitical and unneccessary.

    -Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead, 1943

I think I observe this quite a lot in the (software) industry I happen to be in and must confess that there’ve been times when I’ve sadly shown ample proof myself… 🙁 though hopefully it should reduced over time!

This week I found myself telling a colleague with whom I’ve been playing table tennis regularly – imagine the situation when we play TT – if we’re playing half heartedly, unenergetically, if we’re not playing 100% with full concentration, having a lot of fun, and maybe improving ourselves, whats the %$#@ing point in playing at all? We’re not doing any favor to anybody, right?? So… why should work be any different? The question of course was an open one, to myself as much as to him.

  • credit card callers

Somebody complained about credit card companies calling random people in the company asking them for what they want.

This reminds me of some similar conversations with these people in the good old days when I was in 30C. I used to start with such interrogation myself until I got bored of it and then started with a variation.

In fact then on I used to put on the speaker phone and everybody from the neighbouring cubicles would join in for a couple of minutes of entertainment. [At times when another cubicle would get their call, someone would keep them on hold so that I could come and answer the phone!]

    ———-
Me: Hey… well I was *actually* thinking of buying a credit card, its a good thing you called…

Agent: (oh goody goody) may I have your name sir??

Me: …but before that let me ask you one thing [and dropping to a low tone] I’m actually into some chit fund/insurance business myself, would you be interested in buying something from me…

    Agent: um… er….

Me [very seriously]: its not really expensive… works out very economical really – cmon please buy just one and you’ll surely refer it to all your colleagues…

    ———-

Sorry cant remember the rest of the conversation but you get the idea… and it used to be unique each time (thats why I dont remember any of it – and this was well over a year ago). But it would give everybody around a stomachache laughing most of the time – and this kind of thing gets better withpractice.

Btw I would be careful not to say anything offensive or disrespectful to the agent herself (typically a her), and during the few times this has happened now they’ve always kept the phone laughing themselves (though I suppose thoroughly confused) as well. After all, though arguably unethical, this is the means these people are are trying to earn their livelihood.

Me: Credit card??? Dosen’t that mean borrowing money?

    She: yes sir…

Me: borrowing money is a bad thing. I want to live on my own money and not borrowing anything.

She: but think of the advantages sir….

Me: there is a proverb “haasike iddhashtu kaalu chaachu” (stretch your legs as much as your cot) – why unnecessarily live beyond one’s means, get into debt traps… do you know how many people have got stuck in this kind of thing for generations together?

[luckily I can’t remember details of the heavily philsophical debate that followed, but there’s a good chance that she might have atleast considered changing her vocation]

Me: Sure, I’m busy at the moment, please give me your name and phone number, I’ll call you back.

    She: ok, when sir?

Me: Umm… let me check my calendar…. how about 18th February 2015?

She: that means you dont want, know sir?

    Me: hmm… looks like we’ve spoken earlier…

  • corporate drivers

[disclaimer: this is only within limits of my current understanding, any corrections/clarifications welcome]

Actually we say that software and BPO is also producing jobs for others, eg for countless drivers of company shuttles and cabs. This is true, there is no doubt that they are better off employed than looking around aimlessly for jobs. However perhaps their circumstances could be a bit better.

Whenever I chat with drivers, inspite of some discount for exaggeration or pessimisism, I find that their lives are actually very very tough. Sometimes they’re demanded to work non stop for days together. Why not employ more people and split the shifts? This decision is typically not with the company itself, but the decision of the contractors to whom transportation is outsourced to. And I suppose they have their own reasons and financial model which works for them – in any case they wouldn’t be too happy paying more
salaries to more number of drivers so try to “optimize” on the number available.

At times I’ve noticed that they drivers are quite worn out. And for them, there’s no concept of overtime – no matter how hard they work, the pay is flat per month. They sometimes are quite tense, which reflects in occasional brief outbursts of road rage or arguments with cops or even their boss. Occasional and very brief, because they know that such things could cost them their job – this happens inspite of being careful.

Consider the idea of driving in the Bangalore traffic itself. A private car owner driving in dense traffic if he is even slightly attached to his car (there are only a handful who aren’t) is paranoid every moment some vehicle comes close – oh no… my car might get dented or scratched! The stakes are the pain of going through the insurance paperwork or the expenses of the repair or so on. Hence for those who cannot take all this impersonally, car driving almost becomes a traumatic affair – best avoided as far as possible. But imagine the stakes for the driver – the stakes of any minor accident could be a very significant fraction of his income to the loss of his very livelihood.

And just to help, on some occasions employees complain that they are rude (or can’t speak English properly), or that they’re late for a pickup (road and traffic conditions dosen’t matter) Of course on the other hand there are a lot of other employees who are really quite friendly to them as well.

One thing I realise is that I actually owe these drivers some gratitude for conveying me successfully to and from office everyday. On the one hand, we can say its “just their job” and they better do it else they get replaced. On the other hand, its the job of a software professional to produce high quality software, but still there are bugs, largely due to a certain amount of negligience. But in the software industry, bug-fixing is an almost inevitable and well-known part of the lifecycle of a project itself.

But in their case, any negligence from them in their job – and my limbs if not my very life is at stake! So I believe I certainly owe them my gratitude every single day for having taking any liberty.

Not that I’m some kind of activist that I want to take up any kind of cause for them – not even sure if thats necessary at all in the first place 🙂 – but I think one thing that least one could do that does not involve any
special effort is to smile and be friendly to them. Not a blind rule for every day which may well become yet another mechanical routine, but once in a way if and when one really feels like it… to try and see the fellow
    human being in them.

    A clipping from the serial…

    Explanation of the title song…

The closest I’ve come to actually following a serial is undoubtably Muktha by T.N Seetharam. His tranquility in the most adverse circumstances is something I find pretty inspiring; I’d even say he’s a kind of role model.

My name on this site is only incidental but this page really belongs to all the Muktha fans who are actively contributing as well as passively reading it. Who knows, maybe someone of us can get Mr. T.N. Seetharam to actually have a look at this some day 😉 if not get involved or comment on it – he seems to be a pretty busy man. There are also some excellent ideas like putting up audio/video of the serial on the net (depending on E TVs permission) or enabling Internet chat, etc, and maybe if anyone can post the lyrics of the title song.

Seetharam says that the bloggers post blogs on every episode of the serial and that is a feel good factor.

This site is definitely, afaik the only site where this used to happen. Thanks to the consistent commitment of VANI, DIYA, AMMU and SHRUTI and everyone else who’s given updates. That line is a direct acknowledgement to them! 8)

    —–

I’ve never been much of a fan of Kannada serials, esp after trying to watch some typical family melodrama which my mother relishes, particularly the son-ditches-parents-after-marriage types. However some of the serials that I’ve seen over the past couple of years particularly in E TV – seem to be a radical shift.

The closest I’ve come to actually following a serial is undoubtably Muktha by T.N Seetharam. His tranquility in the most adverse circumstances is something I find pretty inspiring; I’d even say he’s a kind of role model.

Yesterday in the serial, an inspector almost arrests that lady (kid’s Ajji) but just by pure rational analysis he convinces the inspector not to do so. Both my mother and me really appreciated his incisive thinking.

[flashback: Earlier this week, I had a very bad fall in the rain while trying to catch the last shuttle in office and could barely walk. In the evening when I came home, with blood stained and dirty pant and painfully limping – the first thing my mother asked me of all things was – did you see God’s picture today morning!! And she was really angry with me that I hadnt!!]

Later on, after the serial, somehow that topic came back, she says a day depends heavily on what a person has seen in the morning.

Every morning she so kindly prepares breakfast and packs my lunch before I leave to work. She gave an example of a day when recently she woke up in a panic that it had become late for me. She didnt see the diety’s face that morning. On top of it she saw a particular photo (which she considers as bad luck to see first thing in the morning – but still feels obligated to put up on the wall anyway). Then while cooking that day she cut her hand and it bled quite a bit. She concluded that it proves beyond doubt the consequences of not seeing a diety’s photograph in the morning.

    I tried to reason that
    – she had forgotten to see the diety’s photograph
    – she had seen some particular person’s photo (which she usually succesfully avoids seeing the first thing in the morning – though she’s still put it up on the wall out of obligation)

…only because her mind was already in a panicky absent-minded state. And it was because of this same state of mind that she cut her finger as well.

Therefore the root cause was her state of mind, and not what she had seen or not seen in the morning. I prompted her “Dont believe me, you yourself think about these simple facts”.

But without thinking she immediately said that I can’t disprove something that has been known for countless generations – that not seeing a diety’s picture brings terrible luck. (And also seeing some person’s photos as well?? 🙂 – but I didnt ask that!)

I said “how come you understand Seetharam’s arguments so well but you dont want to bother about mine?!”

    She replied… “Oh, that’s only a serial!”

    * Btw now my leg is better – no doctor nothing – I even played TT in the office.
