I: Hi there… you with those magnificent wings basking in the sunlight… can you spare a few of your quiet moments?

D: Hmm… yeah as long as you’re not going to put me up on your blog and let all the mosquitoes and flies in Hebbal Lake know about me…

I: Oh… didn’t know you logged in as well…

D: Ha… thank your stars that atleast we’re the only ones who do, do you think anyone else is jobless enough to go through your pages!

I: Ok ok, but you know its inevitable… so go ahead and tell me your life story.

D: I was born and brought up in the water. My childhood days were spent swimming around all day, darting among the reeds and gulping down unsuspecting larvae and other creatures.

I: Wow talk about a mean childhood!

D: Not just larvae-hood, I’m a predator all my life! In my teenage years, I crawled out of that mucky water and emerge as an adult! We dragonflies are the best, strongest fliers in the insect world, with our long, slender body and wingspan of up to five inches!

I have huge compound eyes. Each eye is comprised of up to 12,000 or more “simple” eyes, or ommatidia, and allow me to see motion in all directions except immediately behind me. My excellent eyesight helps me in hunting prey both in the air and on vegetation. And of course I get to avoid my own predators – frogs, purple martins, flycatchers, falcons, and even other dragonflies!
