influencing factors?

There are so many things that influence our lives. I just made a list here, I am not recommending any of them, some of them may sound superstitious or ridiculous to some, but may be very strongly believed by others. This is merely a listing of things that I’ve come across so far.

how to build a house?

Vaastu Shastra is one of the traditional Hindu canons of town planning and architecture. … Vaastu Shastra deals with various aspects of designing and building living environments that are in harmony with the physical and metaphysical forces/ energies of the cosmos such as the gravitational, electromagnetic and supernatural. Building practices based on limited interpretations of these principles are still sustained in specific areas of India.

~ wiki on Vaastu Shastra

“As an Architect practising in Bombay, I have often been confronted by my clients’ blind faith in the Vastu Shastras – the ancient building code of India. At first, I dismissed it out of hand as an oddity, but the trend refused to die. Finally, I decided to take a closer look at this phenomenon, hoping to gather enough evidence against it”.

“To my surprise, I found that when seen in totality, it conflicted very little with my professional training. The Vastu Shastras were basically, rules for holistic architecture. However, that was only the good news”.

“The bad news was that it had been turned into a monster of superstition by a number of so-called experts. They had crawled out of the woodwork to make a very fast buck by preying on people’s insecurities”.

“This book was written because the non-professional has no way of understanding the first thing about these ancient texts. It explains in simple terms, the origins and meaning of the Vastu Shastras.”

which lucky stone?

Planets begin to influence and control the life of a person right from the day he was born. Thus it is only appropriate that the person’s lucky stone should be ascertained based on the day his soul first entered the physical realm of the universe. In fact this method is by far the most accurate for acscertaining the lucky stone, even though individual preferences may vary.

~ Gemology

Lucky Gem stone energy

Gemstones have living energy. Every gemstone has several attributes. Good luck is a part of the energy of many stones. There are times it may be more helpful to use more than one stone for the luck needed. At times a gemstone’s energy seems to prefer one person to another. This is why it is advised to experiment with gemstones.

As we change our way of life our vibrations change, that is why some gemstones will work differently on the same person at different times. I keep a small bowl with gemstones in it on my desk, one in my bedroom and another in the living room. The gemstones get changed as I feel a need for the life force in my life and house to change.

I have found the amethyst and aquamarine, when used with other stones, bring the most luck to me. Experiment to see which gemstones feel good when you hold them. The best way to know what gemstones will be lucky for you is to hold it in your hand. The gemstones help change the life force around you and that is how gemstones can change your luck.

what’s on my palm?

Palmistry is a method of interpreting the shape of the hand and the lines of the palm, to project the character and possible life experiences of an individual. The science is divided into two broad areas: the study of hand structure, or cheirology, and the study of the lines of the palm, or cheiromancy.

The modern theory is that the lines of the hand represent a graphic shorthand of the circuits of the brain. The nerve group that controls the hands is exactly in the centre of the brain, and all the electrical energies of our thinking pass through it. Palmists feel that the lines on the hand are formed in some relation to thought patterns, nerve linkages, or even chromosomal structures.

how do I write?

Handwriting analysis is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating, and understanding a person’s personality via the strokes and patterns revealed by his handwriting. Handwriting reveals hundreds of elements of the person’s “personality and character,” which include glimpses into the subconscious mind, emotional responsiveness, intellect, energy, fears and defenses, motivations, imagination, integrity, aptitudes, and even sex drives and issues of trust. There are over 100 individual traits revealed and an unlimited number of combinations.

It cannot identify age, gender, race, religion, whether a person is right- or left-handed, or the future.

Can I really change my personality by changing my handwriting?

A: Grapho-Therapy is one of the most modern and effective behavioral modification tools available today. It works for two reasons. First, neuro-muscular connections have a direct impact on the neuro-pathways to the brain that hold patterns of behavior. Secondly, it gives the subject a clear and visual representation of the change she is making on a daily basis… reinforcing the belief system and cementing the change in behavior consciously and unconsciously.

what do I look like?

Physiognomy (Gk. physis, nature and gnosis, knowledge) is a pseudoscience, based upon the belief that the study and judgement of a person’s outer appearance, primarily the face, reflects their character or personality.

It is possible to infer character from features, if it is granted that the body and the soul are changed together by the natural affections: I say ‘natural’, for though perhaps by learning music a man has made some change in his soul, this is not one of those affections which are natural to us; rather I refer to passions and desires when I speak of natural emotions. If then this were granted and also that for each change there is a corresponding sign, and we could state the affection and sign proper to each kind of animal, we shall be able to infer character from features. and how about inter-planetary influences?

Astrology refers to any of several systems, traditions or beliefs in which knowledge of the apparent positions of celestial bodies is held to be useful in understanding, interpreting, and organizing knowledge about human affairs and events on earth. A practitioner of astrology is called an astrologer or, less often, an astrologist.

~ wiki on astrology

But I really liked the down-to-earth honesty of this site of a professional astrologer:

How does Vedic Astrology Work?

There is a common misconception that Astrology is based on the idea that the planets and stars exert some sort of physical influence on individuals, thereby affecting our lives for good or ill. Certainly, the concept of Jupiter’s energy or magnetic vibrations reaching through deep space to target a certain small place on Earth is far fetched.

What Can’t I do for You?

The ultimate goal of Astrology is to know our gifts and limitations, and to use that knowledge to choose our actions and evolve as intelligent beings. We have the choice whether to stay in thrall to the planetary outline of our life or to use our free will and actively direct our evolution. What I can’t do for you is to exercise your own free will. That ultimate responsibility lies with each individual.

mind-programming techniques?

There is no doubt that many astounding things are possible with the human mind – if we can manage to outwit our conventional thinking and “trick ourselves” using any psychological techniques such as those described here.

Self-hypnosis

Hypnosis is understood to be a psychological condition in which an individual may be induced to exhibit apparent changes in behavior and thought.

Self-hypnosis— (or autosuggestion) hypnosis in which a person hypnotizes himself without the assistance of another person to serve as the hypnotist—is a staple of hypnotherapy-related self-help programs. It is most often used to help the self-hypnotist stay on a diet, overcome smoking or some other addiction, or to generally boost the hypnotized person’s self-esteem.

alpha mind power

“To contact this instinctual side of the mind, mind students enter an altered state of awareness. They relax body and mind, blocking out sensory impulses, and concentrate on visualizing, to develop the subconscious pattern that makes the individual super-aware.”

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a behavioral technology, which simply means that it is a set of guiding principles, attitudes, and techniques about real-life behavior, and not a removed, scientific theorem. It allows you to change, adopt or eliminate behaviors, as you desire, and gives you the ability to choose your mental, emotional, and physical states of well-being. With NLP, you learn how to grow from every single life experience, thus increasing your ability to create a better quality of life. NLP is a very pragmatic technology based on an ability to produce your desired results, thus allowing you to become proficient at creating your future! In the end it is not a lot different from understanding how to program a computer — your own bio-computer.

If you understand computers, you already understand how NLP works! Computers are about man-machine interface. NLP is about mind-body interface. The entire process is very similar! Maybe it’s time to learn about your own personal computer — your mind!

NLP techniques and processes help us to understand ourselves and others, and to produce new, and more effective ways to:

Attract the right person for you
Create ideal relationships
Advance your career & make more money
Increase motivation and energy
Create your desired self-image
Communicate to produce the kind of results you want

~ nlp.com

However, wiki has something different to say…

NLP – Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a collection of pseudoscientific self-help rituals proposed for programming the mind

NLP is based on New Age principles [7] such as the belief in unlimited potential through access to subconscious engrams [8], and body language cues derived from the observation of “therapeutic wizards” [9]. Some techniques include behavior change, transforming beliefs, and treatment of traumas through techniques such as reframing [10][11] and the “meta-modeling” [12] proposed for exploring the personal limits of belief as expressed in language.

NLP has been criticized in scientific research reviews which conclude that it is scientifically unsupported and largely ineffective

NLP has been classed as a pseudoscientific self help development [197] [198][199][200], in the same mold as EST (Landmark Forum) and Dianetics(Scientology).

~ wiki on NLP (no wonder it states: The neutrality of this article is disputed. 😉 )

I have read quite a bit about NLP and have had long discussions with a trained NLP instructor as well based on which I’ve formed this opinion…

NLP I felt is psychological tools which only goes to a certain depth.

I’m sure there are many advantages and people have benefitted from it as well. There are many tools associated with NLP. I have no idea whether one is better off doing it or not – its up to an individual to decide. One could also read a book called Awaken The Giant Within You by Anthony Robins to get an idea, its a very good book with many good ideas. There are a lot of chapters that really drag on and on, and some things I felt were misleading. Independent discretion is mandatory.

Just my personal opinion that I felt its unnatural and kind of brainwashing oneself. Mainly I felt we already have so much of programming. Programming from our genes, our entire lifetime’s environment and our own reaction and response pattern… all making us like programmed robots reacting in a pre-programmed way to most situations. What we really need to practice is unprogramming!!

affirmations

This is something simpler.

An affirmation is a form of autosuggestion in which a statement of a desirable intention or condition of the world or the mind is deliberately meditated on or repeated in order to implant it in the mind. Affirmation could be viewed positively as a mobilization of one’s inner resources, or negatively as a kind of self-induced brainwashing, depending on the psychological depth and wisdom of the affirmation. For example, “I am making more room in my life for success every day” is a much wiser affirmation than “I will win the lottery today!” Affirmations can be a very powerful means of reprogramming the unconscious mind. They appear to be most effective when repeated in a quiet and restful state of mind and body.

~wiki on affirmations

Many people who read my book, “The Dilbert Future,” wrote to ask about additional reading on some of the strange topics I mentioned in the last chapter. If you haven’t read the book, this will sound strange, but the topics include Quantum physics, psychic phenomena, and something called affirmations.

~ Dilbert creator Scott Adams on affirmations, where he suggests some books

The list is long and endless.

These things are still within the realm of the “matrix”, within the limits of mind-matter phenomenon. Using them might be being like Cypher in the Matrix [ignore the fact that he was the villain in the story] who says to the agents “I want to be rich powerful and so on” – compared to Neo who could do the same thing but instead wants complete freedom.

On the one hand it might be a good thing, maybe people’s desires get over faster this way 🙂 On the other hand its always possible that such hacks get misused! Or maybe it might be used for serving others.

In any case, how many such factors do we consider? Do we invest our life in pursuit of learning such things? And having learnt it or believing in someone who’s learnt it, taking great care to ensure they’re followed, maybe even live with a certain degree of fear in taking care not to violate them? Use them to escape from problems? Use them for a better quality of life?

I dont know…

  1. Excellent write-up, Sanju.
Vaasthu, Feng Shui, Nameology, Gemology, Numerology, Palmistry, Handwriting Analysis, Physiognomy, Astrology, Self-hypnosis are all different studies which tries to find out past/present and future, or about ourselves. I feel education, culture, eating habits and environment contribute to a person’s mental development in the various stages of life.
It’s the small things that can change our frame of mind from one day to another, things that make us smile in our saddest moments, or things that bring us in a depressing mood, reminding us of all the aspects of our life and shuddering the balance that we have created so far.
There are 4 major factors that influence us. And it is when we face conflicts, the influential factors show up. Looking at all sides of a conflict is not an easy task. Several factors, which we may not be aware of, contribute to our understanding (or misunderstanding) and hence, influence the final choice. Consequently, people involved in the same conflict may arrive at different solutions caused by any of the following:
Context: The circumstances surrounding the issue, influences what parts are thought important or unimportant. For instance, if the individuals in a conflict are acquainted, the nature of the relationship matters. The bond between family members is very different than the one between friends .Gender, past experiences, education and age also act as a frame, modifying how the problem and the consequences are understood.
Values, which are derived from personal beliefs, are grounded in traditional sources such as family, religion and school. They form an underlying framework which focuses our attention on certain aspects of a problem and may advocate for a particular choice. Values vary from individual to individual reflecting cultural, religious and other personal experiences and may play a greater role in conflict solutions arising in situations where points of law are not in question.
Principles, which are sometimes derived from external sources such as institutions or ethical theories, typically provide guidance rather than specify an action. They can assist in prioritizing values by lending greater weight to one value over another. Conflicts which involve legal issues may be solved more readily by a direct appeal to known principles. Professional codes of ethics and laws(rules), then specify how principles are carried out. The four major principles guiding many institutional practices are: beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice (fairness). From these, courses of actions are derived. Which principle has priority in any one decision varies depending on personal beliefs, facts and other contextual information.
Ethical systems are an important part of the process of justifying a particular action. The simple identification of principles and values is typically not sufficient to make a complex, difficult decision. At some point, justification for a particular choice begins to take place. Three of the more common ethical systems select different components of the conflict as a focal point: a person’s motives, the consequences of the action, or an appeal to an external system of principles. As in the case with perspective, the action chosen is influenced by a tension between external forces such as obeying rules or finding a good outcome, and the character of individual (integrity).

I don’t know if I have moved away from what you told in the post. 🙁

  2. Your comment is really relevant Bellur, I think these factors are a closer and more natural influence than the other external factors mentioned above, in fact this relates very much to your other comments here.
