  • familiarity breeds…?

Familiarity breed contempt, when one is judgemental.
Familiarity can breed synergy when one is non-judgemental.

Some people may be interesting to get to know at first, but after a while once we get to know a bit more about the darker sides over time, a distance starts developing. Prejudices, grudges and so on keep on accumulating even among the best of friends. Most of this is we never even are aware about. Sometimes one small incident gives rise to a split in a relationship, and even though that incident in itself might be very trivial and of no major consequence. Romance is just one example, where the so called love-marriages end up becoming hate-divorces! 😉

Human nature is such that we get a kick out of finding faults in others and criticizing others.

But with a little more patience and understanding, we can discover that there’s a much better kick in being non-judgemental. And in looking at the complete picture instead of just one or two narrow perspectives.

    Gandhi had said something interesting:

“You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”

“drops” could even refer not just to people, but even different aspects of the same person – “A person is an ocean…” 🙂

  • intellectual but heartless

Extremely intelligent and ‘well-educated’, Anders Behring Breivik learnt to make his own bomb using chemicals from fertilizers, use sophisticated weaponry, and plot and execute the whole thing. But SO completely cold and heartless.

  • we have met the enemy…

    …and he is us

Pogo daily strip from Earth Day, 1971. (wiki)

Its a tragic comedy that man would rather pursue breaking the sound barrier, than breaking the “somebody else” barrier.

As long as we have the “somebody else” barrier, terrorism will thrive.

Let us strive to put an end not to merely terror-ists, because they are one of us whether we like it or not, but to terror-ism.

Praying for recovery and strength of all our brethren in Mumbai.

  • roadside fun

If we observe the reactions of the people, it gives us a clue about how our mind expects things to be in a certain way. It shows how this merely mechanical mental machinery comes to a halt, when it comes across the unexpected! 😛

To be aware is to breathe life into the machinery.

  • can over a lakh of people be wrong?

This was the question I was asked by a senior friend, when I said something critical about Yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

I agree he’s got some very valid points, and the cause he’s taken up of uprooting corruption is undoubtedly a very valuable one. But being in such a prominent position, he shouldn’t be making irresponsible comments like “lets hang the corrupt politicians” because while corruption is unwanted, hanging is a really stupid solution.

He replied “While Ramdev is uneducated, he has over 1 lakh supporters a lot of whom are highly educated. Can 1 lakh people be wrong?”

  • lets run!

Recently registered for the 10 km marathon in Bangalore (23rd May, Kanteerava Stadium). As I came to know of this run thanks to Omashram Home for the elderly (on facebook), I’m dedicating (see bangalore cares.in) this run for them. The main beneficiary turns out to be myself, as I find the daily practicing for marathon is helping me feel very fit and energetic 8)

My first pathetic practice run yesterday showed me how hopelessly out of shape I currently am, I was pretty much done after just 1 km! 😛 (Tracking using Nokia Sports Tracker on an E71) So this 10 km is a pretty unreasonable thing for me to do! Yesterday evening was kind of negligible. Today’s was marginally somewhat better.

This dedication personally for me will be a nice momento in memory of my (late) beloved Ajji and Tata grandparents whom I grew up with. They were a living example of countless nice values. One thing I learnt as they went through the last years of their life, as a kind of second-hand experience, was the fundamental problem of old age. My grandparents were surrounded by loved ones until their last moments. But others are not so lucky, considering so many elders discarded as liabilities by society. They deserve a better quality of life, and I dream of some day when they will be welcome as an integral part of their families. So this run will be only the beginning of expression of love in action for all our previous generation!

Anyone else joining? Maybe for this or any of the other worthy causes – but of course mainly for the pure fun of it! 😉

  • yet another somethingananda

3 days I listened to his excellent lecture on Astavakra Gita (he had not charged any money also). The value I got from those 3 days remains unchanged, valuable to me even now. Just the metaphor of not being like a cobbler, but seeing beyond the mere depth of the skin, caused a permanent shift in my world view for the better.

I even now respect him for his vast in-depth knowledge an excellent mental faculty, not too much unlike Vishwanathan Anand being an adept at chess. He is a living example of the well known adage that the teaching is more valuable than the teacher.

  • independence day – not just another holiday any more

This was a highlight in a mail from Today’s Kagga, which I feel is indeed true… Consider this movement for example…

The Design for Giving Challenge is a contest applicable for kids between 10 to 13.. Interview with school kids…

This video and movement reminds me of a really thought provoking movie…

A social studies teacher asks some tough questions in his first class: “What does the world expect of you?” Someone answers “Nothing” – yes absolutely correct, the world will get on without us! 🙂 And then he further questions that when the students are through with school after graduation and face the world, What if the world turns out to be a big disappointment?
