  • dealing with unwelcome guests (insects)

There are also many natural repellents that you can place around your home to prevent ants from coming in. If ants are coming in the cracks of doors and windows, put a cinnamon stick, coffee grinds, chili pepper, paprika, cloves, or dried peppermint leaves near the openings. You can also squeeze the juice of a lemon at the entry spot and leave the peel there. Planting mint around the foundation of the house will also keep ants away. Place cloves of garlic around indoor and outdoor ant pathways.

  • can over a lakh of people be wrong?

This was the question I was asked by a senior friend, when I said something critical about Yoga guru Baba Ramdev.

I agree he’s got some very valid points, and the cause he’s taken up of uprooting corruption is undoubtedly a very valuable one. But being in such a prominent position, he shouldn’t be making irresponsible comments like “lets hang the corrupt politicians” because while corruption is unwanted, hanging is a really stupid solution.

He replied “While Ramdev is uneducated, he has over 1 lakh supporters a lot of whom are highly educated. Can 1 lakh people be wrong?”

  • molting process

If we consider a snake, over time, it gets a new skin, and its old skin dies. Its not easy for the snake to get rid of the old skin. It has to wriggle through rocks and narrow spaces and put in considerable effort to get rid of the old skin. Its quite uncomfortable – a biological process called molting.

If the snake’s skin is a metaphor for the habit patterns of our mind, a human being may hardly ever molt. (more…)

  • obituary of Sanjay

Bangalore — Sanjay Mysoremutt, 36, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Bangalore. He leaves among others, his almost 4 year old jovial son, his affectionate wife, his caring mother and sister, family around the globe and many wonderful friends. He was, arguably not to an unreasonable extent, a gluttonous, slothful, inconsiderate, indifferent, professionally complacent, hypocritical, self-centered fellow, driven by an incessant need for attention and self-gratification. Finally, the miserable bastard kicked the bucket, good riddance! 😉

On June 3rd, some fellow was born and by a wild coincidence had a striking resemblance to the same late Sanjay. Though somewhat over the hill aged 36 to start with, and still haunted by the ghost of his previous existence. there appeared to be remote possibilities that he’s a somewhat better version with a few bug-fixes. He is (relatively) more deeply committed to living an uncluttered, contributive life true to his own heart, and to the pursuit of happiness defined by the harmony of what one thinks, says and does.

    ———

Ha ha I hope I haven’t sounded too callous about myself – on the contrary I love life and myself – selfishness, slothfulness and all. I more or less consider myself and each person on the planet, as some internet video had said – ‘perfectly imperfect’ 🙂 However I do wish it was so easy to die each day and be born fresh the next day. I’ve found that a minimum of once a year is a very worthwhile, invaluable consideration!

  • luck at home

Yesterday evening’s rain was phenomenal – they were the strongest winds I’d ever seen. From our 10th floor the view of the neighbouring building looked like a waterfall, with water flowing horizontally, it was an amazing sight!

I had closed our window because the water usually comes in through it, but I had not known that my wife had opened them later again so that my office gets some fresh air. So later after we were down enjoying the view of the rain and dancing in the balcony with our son, I returned to my office and let out a shout! One of my office laptops (Acer Aspire 5520) was soaked!

  • lets run!

Recently registered for the 10 km marathon in Bangalore (23rd May, Kanteerava Stadium). As I came to know of this run thanks to Omashram Home for the elderly (on facebook), I’m dedicating (see bangalore cares.in) this run for them. The main beneficiary turns out to be myself, as I find the daily practicing for marathon is helping me feel very fit and energetic 8)

My first pathetic practice run yesterday showed me how hopelessly out of shape I currently am, I was pretty much done after just 1 km! 😛 (Tracking using Nokia Sports Tracker on an E71) So this 10 km is a pretty unreasonable thing for me to do! Yesterday evening was kind of negligible. Today’s was marginally somewhat better.

This dedication personally for me will be a nice momento in memory of my (late) beloved Ajji and Tata grandparents whom I grew up with. They were a living example of countless nice values. One thing I learnt as they went through the last years of their life, as a kind of second-hand experience, was the fundamental problem of old age. My grandparents were surrounded by loved ones until their last moments. But others are not so lucky, considering so many elders discarded as liabilities by society. They deserve a better quality of life, and I dream of some day when they will be welcome as an integral part of their families. So this run will be only the beginning of expression of love in action for all our previous generation!

Anyone else joining? Maybe for this or any of the other worthy causes – but of course mainly for the pure fun of it! 😉

  • yet another somethingananda

3 days I listened to his excellent lecture on Astavakra Gita (he had not charged any money also). The value I got from those 3 days remains unchanged, valuable to me even now. Just the metaphor of not being like a cobbler, but seeing beyond the mere depth of the skin, caused a permanent shift in my world view for the better.

I even now respect him for his vast in-depth knowledge an excellent mental faculty, not too much unlike Vishwanathan Anand being an adept at chess. He is a living example of the well known adage that the teaching is more valuable than the teacher.

  • license to kill

A license to kill gives one a legal immunity, where one can kill someone else without it being considered as a crime. James Bond has no qualms in shooting down ‘bad’ guys with a gun, and gets away without it without a trace of any criminal record 🙂

Now James Bond may be just some character in a story/movie – but doesn’t this happen every day – we don’t use bullets, but we use words instead, to hurt or even kill (metaphorically) anybody whom we judge as ‘bad’ at that particular situation.

  • Sixth Sense Technology

Just unbelievably impressive – “I want to tell you that you’re one of the 2 or 3 best inventors of the world right now” coming from a TED conference of global thinkers! Not only is this man intelligent, his wisdom is inspirational, he just wants to open source the whole thing, and wants it to be not just secluded in some lab but to reach the masses!

‘SixthSense’ is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information.
