luck at home

Yesterday evening’s rain was phenomenal – they were the strongest winds I’d ever seen. From our 10th floor the view of the neighbouring building looked like a waterfall, with water flowing horizontally, it was an amazing sight!

I had closed our window because the water usually comes in through it, but I had not known that my wife had opened them later again so that my office gets some fresh air. So later after we were down enjoying the view of the rain and dancing in the balcony with our son, I returned to my office and let out a shout! One of my office laptops (Acer Aspire 5520) was soaked!

It had been left shutdown, but kept open and plugged in, first thing I did was pull out the plug, and then dried it up with a towel. Then removed the battery and kept it under the fan. Then inspite of my protests, my wife immediately rearranged the furniture in the office so that such a thing couldn’t happen again. Would the laptop work or not? No idea, but we left it like that all night under the fan and forgot about it and slept peacefully.

As a freelance software developer, a laptop is an important investment. I had only slim hopes that it would be ok.

Sometimes I entertain a superstitious belief that some people are lucky for me, example my better half (now questionably 😉 ). So this morning I first thought I’d better ask her to switch it on. But then felt that such superstitions indicate a lack of faith in oneself. Esp considering, as Suresh has written… “GOD Luck” is knocking on your Door and You are not at home!” 🙂

So I cleaned up my office room, fixed all the power cables etc that had been disconnected due to shifting last night, and then switched it on myself. This post is from that laptop.

What if it hadn’t worked? Well still the superstition is identified and eliminated nevertheless. At the end of it, I could say Thank Heavens (literally) my laptop got cleaned!
