lage raho munna bhai

Finally managed to see the movie Lage Raho Munna Bhai last week! In summary I’d say it was not just a case of a ghost or schizophrenia or a new label ‘gandhigiri’, but a simple matter of discovering within ourselves… an elegant and creative possibility of living non-destructively ! 🙂

There was a writeup here long ago on the lines of… would anyone listen if Gandhi spoke in today’s world? I think the movie managed to do a fairly good job of the almost impossible task !

There’s even a website on gandhigiri and Deccan Herald asking for experiments of Gandhigiri (to which I’d sent a very old writeup on an attempt to save nature)

But is it a passing fad? I think the term ‘gandhigiri’ definitely is. Esp when people blindly misuse the idea for trivial selfish reasons. Afaik, Gandhi applied satyagraha only to things he truly believed in, and not just to get whatever he wanted. When misused for whimsical reasons, it simply amounts to an obstinate kid refusing to eat because he’s not allowed to go out and play in the rain! 😀

The term ‘gandhigiri’ will definitely be a passing fad, but the basic principle of non-violence is timeless.

Recently watched the movie A Beatiful Mind (Russel Crowe) for the second time, following it more closely. Simply no other way to describe the smile I saw on his face. It was the last day, the silence was broken, some students had animated conversations, while others still stayed more or less silent. 1. Sanjay,
The last sentence says it all. The concept of AHIMSA is timeless indeed. But the fashion of referring to Gandhiji’s philosophy as Gandhigiri, thanks to Lage Raho Munnabhai, is unfortunate. It is okay for a dada in a Bollywood film to talk about Gandhigiri in his tapori dialect. But it is unbecoming of the mainstream media, politicians, and people to legitimise its use. It trivialises the lofty thoughts and ideals of the father of the nation.

  2. Bellur, atleast people are talking about it. I cried during the movie… just being so amazed that amidst so much of bombarding from media someone’s actually managing to get a useful point across! 🙂

So the terminology etc are only trivial reasons, why get caught up in them and miss the point 😉
