Based on some excellent German learning books and some of my own ideas, I think a good language learning book must not be like a boring text book, it must be a well designed with the following concepts in it:

  • unconventional – why have every single page in exactly the same format, same font? why not some pages looking like a scrapbook, some concepts presented as mindmaps instead of as a buletted list or tree structure, some tooltips jumping out like hyperlinks in a page. (Of course the idea is not to overdo this but to only have a certain acceptable degree of unconventionality – because such things must not end up becoming a distraction from the main topic!)
  • colorful – lots of high quality photographs and art
  • interactive – maybe crosswords or other word games
  • story telling – must have outline a very interesting story either for different chapters or maybe a single one througout the book, definitely the first one might be better. or else atleast maybe some characters defined in the beginning, and different anecdotes throughout the book.
  • humourous – humourous – definitely must have a good sense of humor making for easy reading – including some comics, jokes and local slang as well
