[updated version of an earlier post] developer tools and utilities

Here is a list of tools that makes a developer’s life easier…

Scite –
Lightweight Powerful Text Editor
: Though there are other ones like Notepad++, Scite is
quite comprehensive and amazingly fast, and based on screenshots only seemed to
be move lightweight than Notepad++. The link above has an installable that
includes an Explorer integration – right click on any file and select Edit with
Scite!

If you work with a lot of XML, xmlnotepad
1.0
is as light as notepad, with a heirarchichal view of XML (
latest version is xmlnotepad 2007 but is a
bit heavyweight )

Treepad lite:
This is a pretty neat Notes-Organiser with which can organise notes in a
heirarchical structure. What I do is I have a shortcut to a desktop.hjt file on
my Windows Quicklaunch bar, so that I can use it immediately. I like this much
better than Outlook’s task notes, because of the heirarchy. “Award-winning
Personal Information Manager, Organizer, Database, Word Processor, Photo Album,
Web-generator + more!
”

Micosoft adds a Open Command Window Here context menu when
we right click on a folder in Windows Explorer in its CmdHere.exe part
of the PowerToys
for Windows XP
 collection.

For quite a while I’d been looking for a decent heirarchichal task tracker on
similar lines. Swift To-Do List Lite
(freeware)
came close, but the free version dosen’t allow me to export a
sub-tree, which is really annoying. Googling gives a LOT of similar
software, but finally the one that’s a winner by far for todo list tracking was
ToDoList
on CodeProject
… [and on top of it, its free and open source (C++) ] !

A more comprehensive list of utilities is at Scott
Hanselman’s 2006 Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows

which includes many tools that I’ve happened to have used as well. Now there’s
an updated list for
2007

  • blogging from Firefox

Mesmerized by the number of plugins and customization available for Firefox. And in my new job that I’ve started this week (more about that shortly), I’m not tied to IE anymore and so spent more time exploring Firefox. Will resume posting again sooner or later. I do have plenty to write about but somehow… you know… same old story… temporarily somewhat over-entangled in the Work@ElectronicsCity-Commute-Malleswaram-HouseholdStuff loop… For now here are some links that I’d come across a long time ago (except the first 2 which I’m yet to read fully) but reminded by…

Too big for my shoes….? Originally uploaded by common man. Too big for my shoes? I may end up thinking so sometimes, but this picture proves quite the contrary… !
