independence – from what?

These are some lovely quotes I got in an email from Channa:

“It is only if we think back to the days of the freedom struggle that we will appreciate this day and our freedom all the more. If we know what our freedom fighters went through to achieve Independence only then will this day become special. We should understand what slavery is to fully know the magic of freedom.”
– S Nagarajan, Topper, Indian Administrative Examination 2005

“I want India to be a developed nation. A country where there is no poverty, where no one goes to bed without food and all have proper shelter. A place where there is no violence of any kind — be it for religion or anything else.”
– Mohammad Abrar, Quran teacher

After 58 years of Independence, I think overall we’ve not done too bad actually! 🙂 India is always a country that can be rediscovered again and again.

There’s one particular quote that I liked…

“My country, right or wrong;
if wrong, to be set right;
if right, to be kept right.”
– Arindam Chaudhuri in the book “The Great Indian Dream”

I believe this makes a lot of sense. There’s no point in blindly singing “saare jahan se accha” (best in the whole world) even when, as my friend Jaimini has remarked, in some aspects it can be “saare jahan ka kachda” (all the garbage of the world!)

We are currently in yet another struggle for independence. And this time, we need independence from corruption, from intolerance, from apathy, from everything that is adharmic – against nature.

There’s a nice quote: “I have found the enemy, and it is us”.

Whether we would like to take up this or not, is a very hard choice each of us (er… starting with me! 😉 ) has to make, every day…

    Dear Sanjay,

    “I have found the enemy, and it is us!” I don’t think there is anything more apt! I really love your statement.

    After almost 60 years of independence, I don’t think young indians can ever understand what the freedom struggle was all about. There aren’t many octogenarians left to tell us their take, of what it was and felt like when they were 20. Our Bollywood is much too idea deficient and typecast to give us a glimpse of what it was.

    I agree with your statement, we haven’t done badly.

    Nehru thought he build temples of modern india. NAM philosophy was path breaking, he also sowed seeds of what was to become the Kashmir monster.
    Indira gave us green revolution, nationalised banks, nuclear bomb and colour tvs! Reason for Punjab terrorism.
    Rajiv gave us IT, Computers and yes Bofors.
    VP Singh divided India on caste lines & brought us Lalus and Mayawatis.
    Narasimha Rao, AB Vajpayee and now Manmohan is making trying to make us feel proud of our economy they also have gives us new words like DMY – Dalit, Muslim & Yadav, minorities and pre-partition like communal riots.
    But Alas, no leadership from any to tell the world we suffer from cross border terrorism and how much we suffer & bleed. 9/11 and 7/7 are everyday part of our India, but they make headlines and world wide sympathy only if it hits the western countries.

    Over the years we have seen an emergency, Trade Union waves, Communal Waves, and also a Tsunami and withstood as a nation! But somewhere along, we became corrupt very corrupt.

    I think the Congress party which has ruled us for so long has just almost ruined us individually, killed our conscience, morals and ethics. Made us not to care, just be selfish. The desire to be in power. “Absolute Power, corrupts absolutely”. Cannot blame them, in democracy the govt. is as good as the people.

    I have to blame all the other ideologies. They have just not been able to break in nor influence.

    Karnataka we have become an incredible corrupt state. Gone are the days of Ramakrishna Hegde. Rumour mill says Dharam Singh has paid 500 crores to be the CM to the central command & equal amounts to Deve Gowda. Every public department is so corrupt it is almost impossible to believe. In KEB, employees to get their medical bills reimbursed have to pay!! We can only imagine what it is to become of a common man when he goes there.

    We need strong leadership, strong men, as Aragorn says to his cornered army in the battle of Pallenor Fields – “We need men, among men!”.
